Rangers can’t do it alone-they need your help!

“Truly speaking, I didn’t believe it until the third day after. I asked myself why did this happen in OUR section? I didn’t know what to do, but deep down in my heart I was hurting seeing that rhinos lying helpless, (killed) for its horn.

One thing that kept coming in my mind was How did these people manage to get to this place without  anyone seeing them?   Many questions kept coming but with no answers.  As for my heart it was painful, as it is now answering these questions. I’m hurt; and your must remember if a rhino is poached under your supervision there’s a lot of suspense; and as a young field ranger like me, it can make or break your career.

All you have to do is to be mentally fit and tells yourself that tomorrow I’ll do better to save this species.”

This ranger, as with many on the battlefields of the poaching war in Africa, is frustrated, and in need of help; help to fight against the scourge of poaching that threatens not only an entire species, but his career and family.

Rangers are trained in areas of wildlife; tracking animals, wildlife identification, patrol tactics and techniques…but with limited funding and time, they are not all skilled at “human” tracking. This is vital to stay a step ahead of poachers.

At Fight for Rhinos, we are looking to provide this essential training to their anti-poaching unit. This APU is located in southern Kruger, a hotspot for rhino poaching. Having lost rhino already, this makes them a target. Once poachers achieve success, they will come back, looking to repeat their success.

Your donations will directly impact this area; keeping not only the rhinos safer, but the rangers as well. Please help and give what you can. Your donations and purchases are urgently needed.

Our goal is to provide the training by February.

rhino tracking VA

Tracking rhinos by Vision Africa in South Africa

We can’t all be in the field working with rhinos, but we CAN help the people who do. Educating communities, tracking rhinos, providing around the clock care and food for orphans, and keeping rangers safe with equipment as well as necessities…it takes funding

Last quarter, we helped
*Vision Africa Wildlife to secure the last piece of software they require to complete the development of their rhino tracking product and to provide body armour for their tracking dog
*helped provide GRU (Game Reserve United) with key software and the purchase of a quad bike for security and monitoring
*purchased veterinary and nursing equipment for Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage
*provided over $1000 usd to Ol Pejeta for daily costs

The only funding we can give them is what you help us with. The Art for Rhinos Auction, and individual donations help keep these people active in their jobs of caring for rhinos.  Without them, rhino conservation would only be a dream.

Using Art to help stop poaching of rhinos

How can this….

Stop this…?

Within the last 24 hours in South Africa

It’s fun, it’s beautiful and it makes a great talking piece for your living room. But this art, like all the pieces in our auction has a much more important goal: to raise funds to stop the slaughter of the iconic, majestic rhinos.

The above image just happened within the last 24 hours in South Africa. This all too common occurrence happens 4 times a day, everyday. The current rhino population CANNOT sustain this level of decimation.

At Fight for Rhinos, we work closely with our UK-based partners Helping Rhinos in carefully choosing a combination of projects that give our rhinos the best chance at a future. Currently this includes

  • assisting in the survival of orphans
  • keeping rangers active in the field
  • supporting and educating local communities on the importance of wildlife preservation.

Your purchase and/or donations are the only way we can keep this going.

Every SHARE, LIKE, RT…spreads awareness.
Every dollar donated, every piece sold…it DOES make a difference.

Please join us in this unique opportunity and help us help rhinos!  ART FOR RHINOS

Calling All Artists!

Are you a talented, serious artist?

Do you want to save rhinos?

Introducing the perfect opportunity: Art for Rhinos

karenmoorhouse 2

by Karen Moorhouse

Fight for Rhinos can’t help but notice the talented, sometimes whimsical, sometimes poignant pieces of African art out there!  At the same time, we receive a steady stream of “How can I help?” questions.

Monetary donations are ALWAYS appreciated and put directly to use! But for those of you for whom money doesn’t come easy, but art does, we are asking for your original art pieces as a donation.

*Anything original (no reprints please) involving rhinos or Africa, including landscaping, wildlife, people.

*Send us an email at fightforrhinos@gmail.com with a photo of your art

*We will send you a release form

*Send us the art, along with your bio and what you’d like included in it, along with a suggested selling price.

*Once sold, we’ll send you a receipt including our charitable number, with the amount it was sold for.

It’s that simple. We are collecting pieces by no later than April; so we have time to catalog and photograph them; as well take inventory of what we have.

Our Latest “Field Projects” Report

Helping Rhinos & Fight for Rhinos Donation Allocation November 2014

We are very happy to have been able to provide the funding needed for Vision Africa Wildlife to secure the last piece of software they require to complete the development of their rhino tracking product.  Our grant of £1,700 will help to protect rhinos on the Vision Africa reserves and also their neighbouring farms.

vision-africa-logo-1We are also very happy to have provided Vision Africa with a further £1,750 to purchase the required body armour for their tracking dog.  The software being implemented (above) in conjunction with the abilities of a highly trained tracking dog, who is now much better protected from the threat of running into the poachers, will we believe make the rhinos in the area where Vision Africa operate much better protected than they were just 12 months ago.

November also saw us provide sponsorship to Reserve Protection Agency in support of their Technology Demonstrations in South Africa.  The demonstrations will be supported by the Department of Environmental Affairs, SANParks, a number of private rhino owners and will help validate the merits of new technology which can be rolled out into both national parks and private reserves alike.  Stay tuned for more information as when it is available.  In total Helping Rhinos have provided £5,000 for these key initiatives that will help improve the safety of many different rhino populations.

r8-jeep-webIn addition, we provided a further £2,500 to Reserve Protection Agency as co sponsors of their latest J8 Jeep.  Along with the other sponsor, Jankel, we are really pleased to have been able to help bring this military spec jeep into South Africa where it will be located at a number of different reserves in support of their anti-poaching work, including Kruger National Park.

This quarter also saw Helping Rhinos continue their support of Game Reserves United as we provided £2,500 to allow them to purchase some key software.  This software will allow far more effective collaboration of the private reserves that make up GRU and the world famous Kruger National Park.  It is key for us at Helping Rhinos to provide essential support to the rhino populations of the Greater Kruger Park.

game_reserves_united_logoIn addition, we provided £1,500 to GRU member Balule for the purchase of a quad bike to help assist with key anti-poaching activities such as fence checking.  It will also allow rangers to move around the reserve  in a much more effecient manner, meaning they cover much more ground on a daily basis in their work to prevent poaching.

We also welcomed a new partner to our books this quarter – the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage, based in KwaZulu-Natal.thul thula  The Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage hope to open before the end of 2014, and our donation of £3,000 will allow the management team to purchase the required veterinary and nursing equipment they need before they can bring in their first rhino orphan.  Stay tuned for more information on the Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage.

Of course, we continue with our adoption scheme of the northern white rhinosbased at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in thumbnail opcKenya.  Your support of our adoption scheme resulted is us sending funds totalling £1,075.  The funding raised through our adoption scheme will help maintain a safe and natural habitat for the rhinos at Ol Pejeta. See our Adoption page to see how you can help us provide even more funding to Ol Pejeta.

Thank you for your continued support! YOU make this happen!
Please consider making a donation to help us continue our work in saving rhinos.

Happier Than a Rhino in a Mud Bath!

by: Markus Schreiber

by: Markus Schreiber

Fight for Rhinos now has official 501c status!!

This doesn’t change much, as we will continue to do as we’ve been doing, but in terms of corporations and government grants, the tax-exempt status opens more doors for fundraising events.

There was a lot of paperwork,  bundles of red tape and one heck of a long time to wait, but worth it for our rhinos!

We look forward to continued work with  Helping Rhinos, as well as moving forward with new fundraising campaigns.

Please-if any of you know of a company or organization that could benefit FFR with a monetary donation or marketing/advertising support, send us an email. Every bit really does help! fightforrhinos@gmail.com

Thank you all for your support! Together, we are making a difference! Endelea Kupigana! (Keep fighting)
